On my way to re-inventing myself as a digital native. This has been a great opportunity to embrace technology. It is getting newer while I (sadly) am just getting older. Can't afford to ignore it but don't expect to become expert in everything.

Week 9: Podcasts, Video & Downloadable audio
9:19.
Youtube! Gotta love it. For the AFL fans - Hitler rants about the 2009 AFL All Australian team.
On a more serious note, there are also lots of educational videos available.
9:20.
A few broken links in this discovery exercise. Checked out Nursing Education podcasts

Week 8: Google World
17: Google Maps and Google Docs
You could really become THE armchair traveller with Google Maps. L'Aquila (Italy) looks nice or perhaps Port Vila. Great to preview the next holiday destination. I wish!
My daughter has to use Google docs frequently for collaborative assignments. I particularly like the template designs and have just found one that I can use for a newsletter that I send out to nursing staff at Mater. This has been a worthwhile exercise.
18:iGoogle
Yep, have been using iGoogle for several years now.

Week 7: Wikis
7.15
So much to absorb in these discovery exercises. I particularly like the Biz Wiki as an example of what a Liaison Librarian can achieve with this. Chad Boeninger posts examples of recent reference questions to his wiki which allows other students to also benefit and/or contribute. This wiki also links to a business blog which has 'tips, tricks, and tools for the business researcher'. Great use of these new technologies!
7.16
It took a bit of searching to locate Task 16 and I haven't been very involved in editing the Library wiki so this took a little time to work out but in the end it was all quite easy. Have now added my entry to the page.

Week 6: Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati
6.13
Have quickly investigated delicious and have created an account but I think that I will need to revisit to make the most of this. It would be good to have the time to create some tags.
6.14
I don't particularly want this blog tagged as I really only intend using it for 23 things exercise but will remember the instructions on Technorati for tagging your blog when I create my 'real' blog. Am convinced that researchers will be creating and needing to search blogs as well as other sources of information in the future.

Week 5: Books Online
5.10
I have not used Librarything before and am quite impressed! Have always avoided cataloguing but this is a quick and easy electronic cataloguer that also combines social networking. Very clever! I may actually revisit this post 23 things.
5.11
Am amazed at how Google Books has progressed in the last couple of years. I have used Google Books on various occasions to find information for researchers rather than use the services of document delivery. This has been really effective particularly for older books that are out of copyright. Have now created my own library.
Some libraries are using Google Books to embed previews into their online catalogues. Links to previews could also be sent out academics as collection development suggestions. Might just follow up on this.

Week 4: RSS and Newsreaders
4.8 Have created a Bloglines account and currently have 1397 feeds. I would recommend RSS feeds to researchers and students who wish to keep up-to-date with recent postings about a particular topic of interest but if used without discrimination it can become just another overloaded email account to read and check.
4.9. Subscriptions to various library blogs such as librarian.net and the shifted librarian are okay but I prefer to read the new technology related feeds (e.g. TechCrunch and Silicon Valley Insider)to find out the latest on new social software and how social networking is being used. I am sure there are many more interesting and useful blogs to follow. I have also found it very easy to just subscribe to Google Alerts using terms such as "information literacy" or "information skills" to keep up-to-date with recent posts in areas of interest.

Week 3 :New technology
3.7
Have just discovered a new website that is called WolframAlpha. What a clever resource this is! It calls itself a "computational knowledge engine" and has been named by Time Magazine as one of the 50 best websites of 2009. It has a standard search box in which you can put a question or search term and then it returns results in a statistical or table format. It covers everything from money and finance such as gdp comparisions, chemical equations, body measurements . Have a look at the introductory video Introduction to Wolfram|Alpha from its creator Stephen Wolfram.

Week 3: Photos and Images
3.5 Flickr
Here is a photo of Cradle Mountain taken during a short trip to Tasmania in April 2009. I would love to return and spend more time. There are lots of walks, beautiful scenery, wildlife. We stayed at Cradle Mountain Chalet which is a newer lodge located just outside the national park.
Have created a Flickr account but am experiencing real problems trying to upload just one photo. It just freezes and will not complete the task so am about to give up on this and try something else. Have looked at lots of other albums on Flickr and their tagging. It just seems rather unwieldy and disorganized to me. Finally, discovered that IE works better with Flickr!
3.6 Tried Picasa instead and found that pictures were much easier to download and organise.

Week 10 cont: More about Facebook
Have solved the issue of an old face on facebook photo and have had a lot of fun using a little bit of web software called Madmen. Mad Men Yourself allows you to create a personalized cartoon and you can play around to look however you'd like from various options presented. So cool!

Week 10: Social Networking
Have recently resurrected a Facebook page that I created a couple of years ago and had neglected. It has been really great to re-connect with some old friends. There is no doubt that it is a very clever communication tool. However, I can really notice the difference between most facebooks accounts and mine though. Their photos are of faces much much younger. Where are all the grey haired facebookers??
